NHS funded sight tests

You are entitled to a free sight test if one of the following applies to you:

  • Over 60 years old
  • Under 16 years old
  • Full time student aged 16, 17 or 18
  • Have a valid HC2 certificate
  • Are registered blind/partially sighted
  • Suffer with diabetes or glaucoma
  • Are considered to be at risk of glaucoma by an ophthalmologist (hospital eye doctor)
  • Are over 40 years old and have a close relative with glaucoma (parent/brother/sister or child)
  • Are a prisoner on leave from prison
  • Have been prescribed complex lenses (power of the lens over + or – 10.00)

or if you or your partner receive(s):

  • Income Support
  • Income based Jobseekers Allowance
  • Income-related Employment and Support Allowance
  • Pension Credit guarantee credit
  • Tax Credit and named on a valid NHS Tax Credit Exception Certificate (NHS white card, credit card sized)

You will normally be entitled to an eye test every two years (or every year depending on your circumstances or if advised otherwise by an optometrist or doctor). You may also be able to have an eye test sooner especially if you are having any new problems. Contrary to popular belief, this early eye test has nothing to do with your prescription changing for your glasses. The optometrist will need to record an early re-test code on your GOS1 form (blue form used to claim for an eye test).

If in doubt or if you have any questions then please feel free to contact us.
